Overview

STATE BUDGET
The state operates on a biennial budget cycle that starts July 1. Agencies submit requests to the Governor by September 1, and the Governor submits a budget to the Legislature in January. The Legislature passes a budget in June. The constitution requires the enacted budget to be balanced.
STATE LEGISLATURE
The Nevada State Assembly has 42 members, and the Nevada State Senate has 21 members serving four-year terms. Nevada state Senators are limited to three four-year terms, and the Assembly is limited to six two-year terms. The Legislature is the third-smallest bicameral state legislature in the United States. Nevada has no regular session in even-numbered years.

2025 LEGISLATIVE SUMMARY
Nevada passed AB343, which requires hospitals to publish online lists of standard charges for all items and services update annually. The act requires hospitals to provide patients with itemized statements and receipts, and may void debt if hospitals do not comply. It also prohibits hospitals from collecting or referring medical debt to collection agencies. The State Department of Human Services is responsible for enforcing the act.
