CHI/University of Louisville Hospital Attorney General 2011
Date Filed: October 7, 2011Status: Decided
Plaintiff Type: State
In 2011, a merger was proposed between The University of Louisville Hospital, Catholic Health Initiatives, Jewish Hospital Healthcare Services, Inc., Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s Healthcare, Inc, and St. Joseph Health System, Inc. in what would have consolidated these into a statewide network of over 3000 physicians and more than 90 healthcare facilities to be referred to as the “Kentucky Statewide Network”.
On October 7th, 2011, Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway determined that University Hospital in Louisville was a public institution, which could affect the potential merger.
On December 29, 2011, the Attorney General issued a report recommending against the merger. In January 2012, Governor Steve Beshear announced that he would not approve the proposed consolidation agreement.
In February 2012, Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s HealthCare of Louisville, Ky., and Saint Joseph Health System of Lexington, Ky announced their successful merger without involving University of Louisville Hospital. The new system is to be called “KentuckyOne Health”.
